Welcome to our News page where you can keep up to date with what’s happening at Westwood.
Don’t forget all our events are also posted on our facebook page which is regularly updated: Westwood Care Home, Chorley
We held a very successful Lancashire Night on 4th October. Entertainment was provided by ‘Too Old to be Told’, a local band. The residents enjoyed an evening of singing along to familiar songs and a hotpot supper was also provided, a ‘reet good do’!
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We are supporting the charity Breast Cancer Care by fundraising through the sale of some lovely pink brooches. The hand made brooches have been knitted by one of our residents and we would dearly love to sell all of them, they are available in the dining room, £1 each.

Tea Party for the Alzheimer’s Society
On Wednesday 27th September we held a tea party at Westwood with donations to be awarded to the Alzheimer’s Society. We are pleased to report the tea party was a great success with plenty of tea and cake available and £66.76 was raised! Thanks to Laura and Julia for the lovely cakes and biscuits and to everyone that attended.
Flower arranging demonstration
On the 13th September we were lucky to have some very talented ladies from Harlequin flowers on Eaves Lane join us. We were treated to a flower arranging demonstration and then encouraged to make our own displays. With many thanks to Jude and Lynsey for a very enjoyable afternoon. We look forward to their next visit on 8th November.
Volunteer Information Afternoon – Saturday 7th October 2 – 4 pm
We are looking to expand our small volunteer team and are holding a volunteer information afternoon on Saturday 7th October from 2 – 4 p.m. Come along and meet the staff and residents and find out what daily life is like at Westwood. We’d love to hear about any skills or experience you would be willing to share with us. Hope to see you soon!
Today we celebrated the official opening of our conservatory, which following refurbishment, is now known as our ‘Garden Room’.
We are grateful to all at Divine Signs for the total transformation of this room which has indeed ‘brought the outside in’. Many residents have already told us how much they love this room, so if you are visiting Westwood soon make sure you visit our new improved Garden Room.
We’re pleased to report our Summer Fair was a great success with £335.20 being raised! This amount will help fund the Residents upcoming activities. We are very grateful to all residents, relatives, friends and supporters for enabling us to raise this amount.
Here’s a few photos from the Summer Fair:
Today we were able to enjoy a visit from Sue, Nora and their rescue greyhound Jack. Sue came to talk about her role as a photographer at the greyhound rescue she volunteers for. She brought along one of her greyhounds, the lovely Jack who very soon felt at ease and fell asleep! Resident Clifford enjoyed being able to share memories of his days as a photographer and time was spent looking at old photos.
We have fantastic news to share – we were awarded a ‘GOLD’ for our show garden at the Chorley Flower Show today! We are so proud and recognise all the hard work from our team of residents, staff, volunteers and friends which made this possible. Here’s a few photos from the day 🙂
Work has continued on our show garden although a little later than planned due to the terrible rainy weather we’ve been having. Here are a couple of photos of the garden today – tomorrow we add the finishing touches. The entries are being judged on Saturday so we are keeping everything crossed.
MINI SHOW GARDEN ENTRY – CHORLEY FLOWER SHOW
Currently we are busy with our entry for the Chorley Flower Show. We have designed a small show garden with the help of gardener Chris, volunteer Joanne our residents and friends of Westwood. We have named our garden ‘The Garden of Reflection’. Please make sure you come along to the Chorley Flower Show in Astley Park on the weekend of 29/30 July 2017 and look out for us in the area adjacent to the Walled Garden.
Here’s some photos of the progress made so far on our first day of planting:
VISIT TO HOPE VIEW SENSORY FARM
On the 19th July a group of residents enjoyed a trip to Hope View Sensory Farm near Tyldesley. There they were able to meet Shetland ponies, llamas, goats, donkeys, horses and other farm animals in a peaceful rural environment. The residents also had the opportunity to have a go at fishing and plenty of opportunities to feed the ducks. We’re pleased to say the day was a great success with the residents and staff all enjoying the opportunities to handle animals and spend some time together in the sunshine and fresh air. We hope to visit Hope View farm again very soon!
